Physical Education Programme

The PE curriculum is divided into six strands – Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games, Outdoor and adventure activities and Aquatics. An important aim of the Physical Education programme is to provide a wide variety of activities. Five of the strands should be included each year where possible.

This year in St. Mary’s N.S. we chose one strand of the curriculum that we felt needed improving. We decided to focus on Aquatics, and during our first school term pupils from 2nd – 6th Class took part in swimming lessons. We were able to avail of the swimming pool in Roganstown Hotel and Country Club and the pupils took part in a 6 week programme. This was the first time pupils went for swimming lessons from the school and it was a huge success!

We have GAA coaches, for football and hurling, coming to the school every Tuesday. There have been lots of different activities that the pupils have taken part in over the past number of years such as FAI, rugby, spikeball, basketball, golf, tennis, cycling, running and dance. As we are working towards getting the Active School Flag we hope to include many more exciting activities this year.
