Creative Schools
St. Mary's NS were chosen to take part in a Creative Schools Project that finished this year. All classes were involved in the creative workshops where ideas were brainstormed and the creativity flowed. The students decided to create two new murals in our school - one in the yard to be seen everyday and one in our large outdoor area that can be enjoyed by everyone in the community.
Our mural in our yard shows how much we as a school love sports whereas our mural in our outdoor area reflects the joy of nature that surrounds us. We engaged an artist, Jorge, to lead us in this project. He taught the children how to plan a mural, how to prime a surface and how to transfer a design on to a large space. The children did all the work under his guidance. Everyone in the school had a turn to paint and to be a part of a collaborative work of art.
We are thrilled with the results and we are already planning our next piece of art to enrich our environment. This is a lovely way to enjoy a group project that links in with the curriculum, not just in Visual Arts but with Maths, Science, Literacy and SPHE.
